Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation

Tuesday, September 6th, 2011

I have had the opportunity on several occasions to work with the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation, and I never cease to be impressed by the people and organizations involved.

The first time I worked with the Foundation, it was to honor the late and great Former First Lady, Betty Ford at the Alliance for Health Once in a Blue Moon @ High Noon event where we presented Mrs. Ford with the Hillman Award. As part of the event the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation asked us to recap the significance of Mrs. Ford’s contributions to the West Michigan health care industry. Read the article here.

Just recently, we assisted the Foundation in developing a sign to promote their upcoming 9/11 tribute. What an honor to be involved.

McDonalds, Happy Cows, Nonprofit Camp and Shelley Irwin

Friday, August 26th, 2011

A great looking group.

I gotta tell ya, I love cramming Shelley Irwin’s WGVU studio with guests every month for Your Biz, Your Town. This month was no different, lots of exciting guests – all with a unique story to tell.

Listen here.

Michael Rodewald, whose family owns several local McDonalds was able to educate listeners on the many misconceptions the community has about the restaurant. Did you know that Michigan is a test market for new menu items? If the new product is approved here, it is then rolled out nationally. Wonder what that says about us? Rodewald also informed listeners that ingredients come from local growers and that the majority of the money spent in the community, stays within the community – I believe 80% – 85%. I think that is pretty fantastic, feel free to disagree with me.

We then chatted with Ryan Cappelletti who is one of several employees at Bartertown Diner, which focuses on vegi/vegan/raw and is worker owned and operated. Ryan explained that being worker owned and operated means that all employees are part of the decision making process, make the same wage and all tips are shared. How great is that? I am thinking of applying, hopefully it isn’t necessary for me to have any skill in the kitchen. Oh and did I mention they only work with happy cows.

Shelley and I were also excited to welcome GR GiveCamp board members – Adam Bird and Jonathan Tower. I happen to think that GR GiveCamp is one of the coolest services out there for nonprofits. And the best part? It’s free! GiveCamp is a weekend-long event where technology professionals – from designers, developers and database administrators to marketers and web strategists – donate their time to provide solutions for non-profit organizations. The guys mentioned that they are in need of lots more VOLUNTEERS – programmers, designers and those that just want to hang out and assist. Yep, it is on a weekend, but think how much you are giving back…get it…GIVEcamp.

Tune in next month on the 4th Friday as we chat all things business, nonprofits and Grand Rapids. Shelley is a rock star and I tag along.

Celebrating Grand Rapids’ History

Wednesday, August 17th, 2011

In November of 2011, the West Michigan based law firm, Smith Haughey Rice Roegee will be moving into the historical Flat Iron Building in downtown Grand Rapids. The project includes approximately 26,600 square feet with the ground floor housing a reception area, elevator and an open tenant space, which was formerly occupied by Blake’s Turkey.

When the project is completed, Smith Haughey will be the only law firm in the nation to have renovated a 150-year old historical building to be LEED certified.

To celebrate the firm’s investment into downtown Grand Rapids, they have hired 834 to manage public relations, design, event planning, video production, social media, strategy and more. Below is just some of the recent press that was secured for Smith Haughey.

Honoring Former First Lady, Betty Ford

Honoring Former First Lady, Betty FordIn September of 2010, 834 Design & Marketing was asked to plan a very special event, one that would honor Former First Lady, Betty Ford. It was an exciting event to plant, as it included public relations, event management, social media, design and coordination with the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum.

Through Mrs. Ford’s courage, advocacy and activism, the nation changed the way it views, talks about and cares for disease – specifically breast cancer and addiction. West Michigan is incredibly fortunate to be a beneficiary of her ground-breaking vision. She was a truly phenomenal woman, and she is missed.

Telling WMSTI’s Story

Friday, August 12th, 2011

Companies that serve the health care or life science industry, sometimes have a hard time telling their story to the local community. When the services you are offering are complex, how do you break it down so everyone understands?

834 was able to work with the local online publication, Rapid Growth Media, to develop a video that would assist the community in visualizing WMSTI’s mission and the organization’s importance to West Michigan.
